Are you a ‘cheug’?

Good news! The internet is currently serving up a new way to let you know you're old.

You might have noticed the word "cheugy" popping up online and wondered what it means and how to pronounce it.

Cheugy (pronounced Chew-Ghee) is a new way to say something is no longer cool or to describe people who still follow out of date trends. Basically, it’s “the opposite of trendy.” But the word denotes more than just all things out-of-style. It also points to how “behind” a cheug might be for following a certain trend long after its prime. For something to be cheugy, it has to have been the height of fashion at one point.

Although it has been in the Urban Dictionary since 2018, it’s blown up recently on TikTok with all manner of people busy pointing out what's cheugy, having a panic attack over being cheugy or just embracing their newfound existence as a cheug.

The irony is it could be argued that the word “cheugy” has already been so overexposed that it is, in itself, cheugy — if it was ever trendy enough in the first place to qualify.
